Principal's Story

Published by Beenleigh State High School

This week our Agriculture, Hospitality and Junior Chamber students have organized the sale of school meat trays (from one of our steers), honey, strawberry jam and strawberries to raise funds for our drought stricken farmers. All funds raised will go to the Buy a Bale campaign. As of Wednesday over $500 has already been raised. A big thank you to Alan Platten and the team at Teys Australia for preparing the steer and meat trays at no cost.

I remind Parents that we cannot allow students to leave to purchase lunch, even if a parent writes a note. The school runs an excellent tuckshop that has wholesome food and is relatively cheap. I ask for your support on this matter.

We have hosted our first Year 7 enrolment evening which was very well attended. If you were unable to attend, don’t worry, as there will be a number of others coming up soon and of course if you would like some further information please contact the school. Our staff will soon be starting to visit primary schools to talk with the Year 6s about going into Year 7.   If you need any more information please phone the school and thank you to Mr Middleton for his work on this important transition program.

A number of students have been to the Ekka over the last week. Our students are going from a range of our programs and we are especially proud of the performance of our show chooks. Thanks to Mrs Ash and her team for their work in this area and see inside for the great results achieved.

Our Senior Students will complete the QCS test in a couple of weeks and I wish all those who are completing it good luck. Remember, the best advice for students now is to be well rested and be in a good frame of mind. Students are currently completing a range of practice instruments.

Our next P and C is meeting is on Monday night in the e-Learning Centre at 5.30pm and all are welcome.

All parents are reminded that the Annual Contribution Levy is well and truly due. The levy needs to be paid before students can participate in school activities like the Senior Formal. Please pay the levy as soon as is possible.

The school has recently completed the School Opinion Surveys (SOS). The SOS asks a range of questions about the school to parents, students, and staff. Thank you to those families who completed an SOS. The information from the surveys is returned in late October and I will share it with the school community at that time.

Regards,

Mr Matt O'Hanlon

ATHLETICS CARNIVAL 2018

The Beenleigh SHS Annual Athletics Carnival was held on Friday 29th June. We were blessed with a beautiful sunny day (after a very cold morning) and as a result a large percentage of the school population turned up to participate in the 2018 carnival on the last day of term 2.

Students from each house competed enthusiastically throughout the day in 100m, 200m, Long Jump, Triple Jump, Shot Put, Discus, Javelin events as well as Indigenous games and Tug of  War. At the end of a day of tight competition, Pimpama House retained their athletics championship from last year by a narrow margin after a close challenge from Logan and Albert.

Volleyball Queensland Senior Schools Cup

Published by Eric Massey

The Beenleigh SHS Open Girls Volleyball team competed at the Volleyball Queensland Senior Schools Cup on 10th - 12th August at Carrara Stadium.

The girls were very excited to participate in this event, particularly as it was the first major tournament for about half of the team.

Despite having a clear  height disadvantage in comparison to the other 19 teams in their division, and drawing a tough pool, the Beenleigh girls played consistently well to win 3 of their 4 preliminary matches to advance to the quarter finals against Brisbane Girls Grammar.

The girls played skilful volleyball to defeat BGGS convincingly and advance to a semi - final against Mansfield SHS. In a high quality semi-final featuring numerous momentum shifts, the girls unfortunately lost 15-13 in the deciding set.

Putting aside the disappointment of narrowly missing the final, Beenleigh then faced Tagai State College in the Bronze medal playoff. At one stage the Beenleigh girls looked down and out, trailing by one set and behind 19-14 in the second, but rallied magnificently to eventually win the match 23-25, 25-23,16-14.

The Beenleigh girls were fantastic representatives for our school and many positive comments were received from opposition coaches and players about the spirited way our girls play the game, and interact with other teams. It was a privilege to take such a wonderful group of girls to this tournament and they are to be congratulated on a well deserved result.

BUY-A-BALE CAMPAIGN, Beenleigh State High School

Published by Odette Cheal

Logan Business Community Generosity is HUGE!

BUY-A-BALE CAMPAIGN – Beenleigh State High School

Our students are running a campaign to continue the need to support farmers in providing food for their stock with a view of enhancing the lives of young people on farms that are in crisis. The aim of the campaign is to raise $10,000 for a semi-load trailer of Hay to be distributed  to farms in crisis from here to Charleville.

The Beenleigh State High School Chamber of Commerce want to thank the Logan Business community who have embraced the Buy-A-Bale Project and we have received an enormous amount of generosity and community spirit. Owing to the backing and support of our Principal, Deputy Principals and our Business Head of Department, our students put their entrepreneurial skills and ideas to work.

It is through the big-heartedness of our Agriculture Head of Department, Peta Lenane, her students and Teys Brothers , we have  donations of meat tray, honey and strawberries.

We would like to thank our colleagues at Beenleigh State High who kicked started the first event by donating all proceeds from a briefing breakfast.

Sandra, our Police Liaison Office took our Chamber of Commerce students to the Beenleigh Police Station and we were again overwhelmed with so many staff wanting to buy the honey.

Thank you to the Beenleigh Yatala Junior Chamber of Commerce and others schools participating in the project.

We were speechless with the kindness of our business community at the Beenleigh Yatala Chamber of Commerce (Senior) who opened their hearts to this campaign and gave generously and bought more honey this includes Councillor Russell Lutton ,Lighthouse Care, Danielle Newman Workers First, Craig and Tracey Murray Dog School, Bendigo Bank Marsden, Adam Gleaves, Shane Drew Sign It, Vicki Bailey Career Employment Australia Ltd, Carolyn Kinniburgh Soroptimist International and many of the other 75 business owners attending at the Breakfast.

So far this campaign has raised $1,214.00 in just 3 days which is 11 large round bales of hay. We have another school who is going to be working with us and thank you Livingston Christian College.

An AMAZING EFFORT from the students who collect the honey and pick the strawberries to the market and sales effort of the Chamber of Commerce students, the schools and business community.

AND WE’VE ONLY JUST BEGUN!!!!
