This week I was able to take 22 students with Mr. Howe to QPAC to attend the musical, Muriel’s Wedding. The play was fantastic and I thank Mr. Bill and Mrs. Pat Heck for their support in funding this excellent activity in partnership with the QPAC Chairs Trust (see photo inside). The students thoroughly enjoyed the performance and it gave them a chance to not only see a top quality musical performance but to also tour the Queensland Performing Arts Center. Thank you very much again Bill and Pat for your wonderful support of our students.
Last Saturday night I attended the PCYC 40th Anniversary Dinner where we recognized the significant contribution of the staff of the Beenleigh PCYC, not only to our school but, to the entire community. A number of our former students were recognized and the boys from Divine our Destiny (former students) performed their new single. The PCYC also recognised two of our former students who have done well since leaving school. Macey Dahili is now a registered nurse and Belinda Moshi is a para legal secretary. Both students benefitted from the Two Tribes program conducted by the PCYC (See photos – and it was an 80s themed night!).
Our Yr. 12 students are now reaching the end of their schooling. The leadership students have participated in all school events and have represented the school in a range of activities that allow them to be aware of the depth of community that exists and I hope encouraged engagement in their own learning. Recently, our school had a tour of Parliament House with dinner on the deck, courtesy of our local member, Ms. Melissa McMahon. Thank you to Mrs. Bown and Mrs. Hutchins for joining me on the night.
Our Hospitality and Catering students recently gained valuable work experience at the Oktoberfest Brisbane held at the RNA. I was able to attend and can attest to the great job our students did and I thank the team at Oktoberfest Brisbane for providing this excellent real life opportunity to test the work readiness of our students. The team from Oktoberfest said our students were outstanding. (see photo).
At the recent QSS Track and Field Championships held in Cairns our HOD Senior Schooling, Andrea Field, was awarded Life Membership for her work in Track and Field over a long period. One of our students, Lillie Laubscher, competed at the state championships and medaled in a number of events. Well done Ms. Field and Lillie!

Beenleigh State High School in partnership with the Beenleigh Yatala Chamber of Commerce are leading the way in financial literacy by rolling out a new program designed to engage and improve students financial life skills.
The Wealth Academy’s financial life skills library of resources will be rolled out to all students and is relevant from not only a curriculum perspective but it aims to support the general financial skills students will need as they progress through their teen years and into adulthood.
The Wealth Academy Director and former school principal, Ken Swan has developed the financial life skills program with the support of some of Australia’s leading financial institutions including FINSIA - the leading organisation for Australasia’s financial services industry.
Students will receive regular lessons around financial goal setting, budgeting, banking, credit cards and taxation just to name a few. Parents are encouraged to engage in conversations with their children about finance and access the parent resource library available through a login process specific to The Wealth Academy and Beenleigh State High School. Parents will have access to many resources that will help them guide the financial education of their children.
We also thank the Beenleigh Yatala Chamber of Commerce for being very supportive of this cause and sponsoring the extensive resource library into the school.
Following are the login details for parents:

Beenleigh State High School's Lilly Laubscher competed for the South Coast team at the recent Queensland Secondary Schools Track and Field Championships held in Cairns on the 18-20 October.
Lilly competed in 5 events in the Multi Class division for her age group, and came away with some impressive results.
Lilly won silver medals in 1500 metres, 800metres and Discus. She also came 4th in 400 metres and 5th in Long Jump.
Lilly loves her athletics and works hard to develop her abilities, and she is to be congratulated on a great achievement. She is a wonderful representative for Beenleigh SHS.
The Beenleigh SHS Yr. 8 Girls Volleyball team competed at the Qld Volleyball Junior Schools Cup on the 18th - 20th October at Carrara Stadium. Playing in their first ever Volleyball tournament, the girls finished 2nd in their pool, with 3 solid wins against Craigslea SHS, Harristown SHS and Gin Gin SHS, and a tight 3 set loss to eventual winners Capalaba State College. They defeated Macgregor SHS convincingly in their quarter final to set up a semi - final against Redeemer Lutheran College. In a high quality game played with real intensity, Beenleigh fought hard but fell just short, going down 27-25, 25-23. In the playoff for the Bronze medal, the girls shook off the disappointment of the semi-final loss to comfortably defeat Kelvin Grove College in 2 sets.
The team set three goals for the tournament – enjoy ourselves, play our best and learn about tournament volleyball, and they did each of these in spades. The girls played with great spirit, were wonderful representatives for Beenleigh SHS, and an absolute pleasure to coach.
On the 14th of November, Ms Killian, Mr Hawkes and 17 Grade 10, 11 and 12 student set off on an adventure! Travelling on a 16 hours coach down to Perisher Valley, NSW didn’t seem so bad when we arrived at our destination, particularly because we had 6 days of snow, skiing, snowboarding and snowball fights ahead of us!!
The first day of travel was absolutely monster!! After getting off the bus and stretching our legs out, we gathered up our hire gear straight away and were on the slopes by the afternoon. As soon as we saw the snow, we all just couldn’t resist forming snowballs and throwing them at each other, even hitting some in the face. Of course we then had to make a snowman, which was actually harder to shape than we thought. For most of us it was the first time we had ever seen snow. Once we got that out of the way, we fumbled with our ski boots, managed to clip into our snowboards and headed to our very first lesson.
Every day for the next 5 days, we started nice and early at 6:30am with a hot cooked breakfast. This fuelled us for our 2 hour lesson of skiing and snowboarding at 8:30am. All our lessons started at the bottom of Mt Perisher at a place called Smiggens Hole as this was considered a more beginner’s area. Some people picked it up easier than others. Some people spent more time on their bottoms rather than on their feet. Some people opted for a much easier and less technical version of a toboggan ride down the hill. One thing remained the same- everyone had a blast!
By day 3, everyone had learnt so much from the instructors and had gotten so good that we were able to venture away from Smiggens Hole to explore further up the mountain to Mt Perisher, Mt Blue Cow and Guthega Peak. From here we had some incredible views and discovered the true beauty of nature in the snow. We were very lucky on the second day of our trip to witness a snowfall! Although it was colder, it added 5cm’s of snow onto the mountains and enhanced the place’s magic. It also made the skiing and snowboarding the next day much smoother and faster.
To all the students that did attend, I’m sure they can all contest to the epic, once in a lifetime schooling adventure this trip was. There were a ton of laughs, great memories made, new skills learnt and tighter bonds formed. The Beenleigh SHS Ski Trip hasn’t happened in the last few years but after this years’ experience and adventure, it’s here to stay!
Students receiving important safety information in a "High Voltage" presentation from Qld Rail this week.
The Ipswich Multifest 2019 was held on the 20th September. Feedback from Multifest was that our students have done exceptionally well, and once again have represented our school with pride, respect and passion.
Anyone that has had to prepare for a big school event (Paddock to Plate, School Musical, Eisteddfod, Karyn Murphy Cup, Awards Night, ComMANdo and Reset, Formal, Young Entrepreneur, Beenleigh’s Got Talent – just to name a few), knows the work that goes on behind the scenes, and our Culture Group students have definitely put in the hard yards for the Multifest performance, rehearsing lunch breaks, after school and before school.
This year we represented six cultures (Afghani, African, Cook Island, Maori, Phillipino and Samoan) and we had the crowd roaring!
Big thank you to all who have shared rooms, opened doors and been a part of Culture Group this year – particularly Chris Carberry, Wendy Captain, SJ Currie, Andy Chong-Nee, Lamech Sua and Isaac Griffin.
If you see Daytana Winitana around – please congratulate her on her outstanding leadership this year. That girl is going places!
MARINER, Rebecca - Head of Department Humanities
Beenleigh SHS celebrated their annual Culture Day, on Friday, 18 November. It was a great and successful day of song, dance, language, colour and vibrancy. The cultures that were represented were Indigenous, Maori, Samoan, Tongan, Cook Island, Afghan, Hazari, Filipino, Music and vocal groups, Indian and African. Teachers and students ran outstanding workshops for Year 8 students. There was great engagement and learning. A big shout out to the teachers, members of the community and students who helped and supported the day.
We all know that everyday counts, and well it certainly pays off, all you have to do is ask the senior students who we took to Game Over on the last week of Term 3. The students who were able to attend were those with outstanding attendance and also those “movers and shakers” who had made the greatest improvement to their attendance. The place was abuzz with Beenleigh Shirts as the students took to the numerous clip and climbing frames that were available. Some of which who raced against each other to scale the heights to see who could make it to the top first. There was then a rotation as the fun continued as we went along to the lazer tag arena. Students took on each other in teams to defeat their opponents. Some even braved it to complete it as a stand alone mission. The juniors didn’t miss out either, as we headed to the Hyperdome to watch the adorable film “Abominable”, on the day of its release. There was popcorn and soft drink a plenty and even some tears shed (mostly by Miss Wonnacott and Miss Hammel) as the big footed creature safely made his way home to Everest. The students’ behaviour was exemplary and it was so wonderful to see you all celebrate your attendance achievement.
On the 14th September Beenleigh High students took part in the Young Entrepreneur competition. We are very proud to announce that Beenleigh SHS took out 1st and 2nd place (every single prize on offer).
Madina, Moba, Beyza, Sema and Momena came tied first with Tia and Rykila. Both groups have been offered the experience to continue working on their business concepts with industry experts. These students will go into the city for one week to work with start up companies at fishburners on Queen Street Mall.
Second place was again tied with Ryan, Rosie and Maddy. These students have been offered tickets to attend the Something School Conference in October.
Lastly, special mention from the judges went to Maxwell who was offered the opportunity to pitch his sustainable water idea to the senior chamber of commerce as well as to water and infrastructure at Logan City Council. With aim of being offered a traineeship/ employment.
All students did the school proud and if you see them on Monday please congratulate them.
