Principal's Story

Published by Beenleigh State High School

Don’t forget the 4th Annual Paddock 2 Plate Luncheon is coming up on Friday 31st August. This is a great event so phone now to book your tickets from the office. See flyer inside.

Ms. Te Iwimate and four of our Hospitality students Emily Veivers, Sara Longham, Marshall Kearns and Isiah Blair are about to go to China for Work Experience. This is the second year of this excellent program where as well as the work experience they will get the opportunity to see some nearby tourist attractions. Our reports from last year are that the Hotel and surrounds are fantastic.  I will be spending a week there as well and the nearby cities also sound exciting.  I cannot thank Dr. Jennifer Cronin and the staff of Marco Polo for their excellent support.  Dr. Cronin is coming to Changzhou to visit our students which is amazing given the complexity of her role managing an international company. This is most appreciated and I, like the students, am looking forward to this wonderful opportunity. Thank you to the P and C for their support

Last Thursday along with 7 students and Mr Townsend I visited Ben Mills at the Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital where Ben and his family are dealing with Ben’s illness. I am happy to report that Ben is doing well. I would like to Thank Mr. Richard Lloyd-Jones for presenting Ben with a St George jersey and cap. Thanks to Craig Young from the Dragons and the Queensland Supporters Club for the presentation. Richard is a well-known Dragons supporter who when he heard Ben was also a Dragons man he organised the gear and made a personal donation to the family (see photo below).

Our Year 8 students recently prepared Breakfast for our staff at Wednesday morning briefing. They took over from the seniors who normally do it and they thoroughly enjoyed it. Thanks to the teachers and seniors who helped start our next generation of hospitality and catering students. Alexie Taylor is pictured with me having prepared an omelette for me (see photo below).

Can I ask parents to speak with their children about road safety?  Some students are showing disregard for basic road rules and this can only lead to problems in future. Students need to obey directions around the school especially at peak hour. We have had some reports about foolish behaviour in, on and around the roads and I would again encourage you to speak to your child about basic safety.

Exams are just about completed and all students should be in the process of completing assignments.  Finally year 12 students are reminded to finalise their accounts so they can participate in the end of year formals etc. Please see me if there are any issues around this.

Can I ask all parents to ensure their children wear maroon, white or grey jumpers to school.  As winter progresses it is important we can easily identify all students.

Regards

Mr Matt O'Hanlon

Virtual Visit

The Year 8 and 9 extension English classes have been reading books by actor turned author Tristan Bancks. On the 14th June these classes were lucky enough to take part in a virtual visit with the man himself. He provided an interesting insight into how he begins the writing process. He shared how he sometimes just starts writing in the morning for as long as he can without worrying about correct spelling, grammar and punctuation. He also explained to the students how each book he writes he creates a unique soundtrack that he listens to for the duration of the writing process. He finished the session with questions from the floor and also reading the first chapter from The Fall.

Rugby League

Published by Beenleigh State High School

Congratulations to the Year 8 Rugby League team who won their Grand Final yesterday against Forest Lake 20-10!

Going in as massive underdogs, having been beaten convincingly by Forest Lake previously Mr Townsends boys played one of the most spirited and courageous games I have ever seen! Right from the get go the boys were energetic, enthusiastic and displayed not only the Rugby League skills but the personal characteristics our school and Rugby League Academy is about.

The Forest Lake team were considerably larger across the park and have been the benchmark all year, winning every match by 30 points or more... BUT NOT YESTERDAY! Our little champions ripped that field up and gave it absolutely everything!!!!

Mr Harreman, who is the convenor of the Titans Schoolboys Competition was sitting up in the box doing the scoring and commentary and could not be prouder! He was so excited for the boys he had to make sure he was checking the microphone was off between plays as he was that vocal! For the rest of the night he had members of the public (whom of which some he didn’t even know or had met before) tell him “How good were those Beenleigh boys!?!?”.

A huge, huge, huge credit to Mr Townsend for his never say die work ethic and resilient attitude he installs in those boys. Not only that, but to all of the support staff and Joe Wilson for travelling down last minute all the way to Burleigh to help run water and provide motivation!

2018 TITANS CHALLENGE CHAMPIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Girls: Our U14s (yr7 and 8) Girls Rugby League Team won the Grand Final last night against PBC, 5 tries to 2.  Our U16s (yr9 and 10) also took out the Karen Murphy Cup but were that good they didn’t even need to play a grand final – LEGENDS!   Shout out to Zoe from the Open Ladies and Ashleigh Doyle from the U14s who were rewarded ‘Player of the Carnival’.

These girls have worked hard all season for this championship and last night they took care of business, put their grit to the test and emerged victorious.  I got shivers, as our girls literally drove PBC onto their backs, the sound of contact drawing many “owwwwww” from the supporters.  The echo of HOLD, HOLD UP filled the field as Beenleigh charged as a defensive line, holding up every attack PBC sent at the line.  An oldie but a goodie, defence wins games and our girls ripped in hard.

Beenleigh’s forward pack set the example early, proving too powerful the PBC defence.  Zara and Cadeau breaking multiple tackles every run up.  Ashleigh, Patricia and India took care of the rest, finding gaps in the defensive line and attacking with dominance.  With the wingers and centres running their lines with conviction they certainly put true meaning to ‘spaces not faces’!  Caprice our fall back- didn’t let a girl by her, making some huge one on one tackles. Needless to say, the strength and determination of our team could be heard in neighbouring suburbs when the final siren sounded and our girls celebrated their well-earned victory.

This victory, this memory, for these girls will be a significant milestone in their time at Beenleigh High.  Please be sure to applaud their efforts and congratulate them.  As their coach, I’m so very proud of them.

WHO ARE WE: BEENLEIGH

Thank you to Emina and Kelly who came down and supported the girls!
