Last Friday I was able to go and watch our girls play in the state finals of the Karen Murphy Cup Rugby League Competition. The girls were unlucky not to make the final of the competition played at Redcliffe as they were beaten on the bell by Kirwan SHS from Townsville. This was a tremendous effort by the girls who looked great in shirts donated by Coach Te Iwimate’s father. Well done girls and coach!
Last Sunday the Beenleigh Historical Village celebrated Heritage Day at the Village. There were a range of family friendly fun activities including our Agriculture Department providing a livestock display, our musicians playing, Lara Kaschuler face painting and our Vanteen being present. Our students provided excellent activities in the community and I thank all the teachers who provided time for this. Well done to the hardworking local committee for this event.
Our Paddock to Plate luncheon was a resounding success. We had 260 people in the school (including the Premier, Education Minister and Employment Minister) hall to see our students at their best. Thank you to all who took part in this wonderful showcase and a special thanks to Matt Golinski for his work with our students and our amazing hospitality staff. We also opened Bookinburra prior to the event and the Premier spoke to our students about making the best of every opportunity. A big thank you to all staff for their assistance in this major undertaking. (See story and photos inside).
Thank you also to Ms. Bown for putting on the QCS breakfast for our Year 12 students. I know they enjoyed it and I hope it helped them to perform well through these demanding tests.
All parents are reminded that the Annual Contribution Levy is well and truly due. The levy needs to be paid before students can participate in school activities like the Senior Formal. Please pay the levy as soon as possible.
I hope our students enjoy their break and remind all that school resumes on Tuesday 8th October.
Regards,
Matt O'Hanlon

Are you concerned about your student’s online behaviour, use of social media or unwanted contact online?
How can I as a parent learn more about these issues so that I can help them to understand safe online behaviours, habits and skills that will make them safe?

Beenleigh State High School in partnership with the Beenleigh Yatala Chamber of Commerce are leading the way in financial literacy by rolling out a new program designed to engage and improve students financial life skills.
The Wealth Academy’s financial life skills library of resources will be rolled out to all students and is relevant from not only a curriculum perspective but it aims to support the general financial skills students will need as they progress through their teen years and into adulthood.
The Wealth Academy Director and former school principal, Ken Swan has developed the financial life skills program with the support of some of Australia’s leading financial institutions including FINSIA - the leading organisation for Australasia’s financial services industry.
Students will receive regular lessons around financial goal setting, budgeting, banking, credit cards and taxation just to name a few. Parents are encouraged to engage in conversations with their children about finance and access the parent resource library available through a login process specific to The Wealth Academy and Beenleigh State High School. Parents will have access to many resources that will help them guide the financial education of their children.
We also thank the Beenleigh Yatala Chamber of Commerce for being very supportive of this cause and sponsoring the extensive resource library into the school.

Financial life skills message: Individual economics
We often forget that each of us have our own economy. In fact, how we manage our own economy has an effect on our families and the broader community.
“What is good for individual households is often good for the economy as a whole. … financial literacy is very much about encouraging individuals and families to use their money wisely – both their own hard-earned income and that borrowed from financial intermediaries. But encouraging households to save, for example, is not just good for them, it is also very much in the longer-term national interest.”
Remind your teen that they will be responsible and accountable for their own economy in the future. Their individual economic success will largely depend on the financial decisions that will make in their future.
Helping teens now will help them in their financial future.
This message is provided courtesy of our school partners Beenleigh Chamber of Commerce and The Wealth Academy. Please contact them if you require support with the financial education of your teens.
Our fifth annual P&C ‘Paddock to Plate’ luncheon was an excellent showcase of our school community and what Beenleigh State High School students can achieve. On Friday 30th August 2019, 260 members of our local community, including the Premier of Queensland Annastacia Palaszczuk, Minister of Education Grace Grace, Member for Macalister Melissa McMahon, Minister for Employment and Training Shannon Fentiman, and special guests Don Waters, Barry Cronin and Michelle Pullen of Marco Polo Hotels, dined on a delicious three course meal. Prepared by the Year 11 and 12 Kitchen Operation students and overseen by celebrity Chef Matt Golinski, Ms Te Iwimate, and Chef Jordan, the food was outstanding and a credit to the hard work of the students and staff. Guests were entertained by MC Eric Massey, and the students and staff of the String Ensemble, Mibben Jindi Dance Group, School Vocal Group, Percussion Ensemble, Jazz Band, and Dance Students.
This year's menu comprised of Saverin Fisheries Prawns and Spiced Lamb Borek for Entrees, Gotzinger Smoked Bacon wrapped Beef Fillet and Grilled Pork Loin for Mains, and Lavender and Buttermilk Crème Caramel and Chocolate and Honey Custard Profiteroles for Dessert. The Agriculture Department did a fantastic job with the produce, and according to Teys Australia, ‘The beef is the best quality we’ve seen so far.’ Thank you to the Agriculture students, Ms Lenane, Mr Whittle, and Tim for all the hard work on the school farm leading up to the event.
Certificate II Hospitality Front of House students transformed the school Multi-Purpose Building into a beautifully decorated venue and served these delicious meals under the guidance of Mrs Graves and Ms Kennedy. The service was outstanding on the day with many guests commenting on the professionalism of the students. A special mention to year 12 student Samantha Espino for taking on a Supervisor role during the event and serving the Premier’s table.
All of our Back of House and Front of House students worked really hard in the weeks leading up to ‘Paddock to Plate’, and the kitchen and restaurant in the Trade Training Centre has been abuzz with activity. Students worked an allocated roster in the three days leading up to the event to guarantee everything was prepped, cooked, organised, counted, and stacked to ensure the event ran smoothly . Beenleigh SHS Jam, Honey and Poppy's Chocolates (handmade by BSHS students) were 'Table Favours' this year with each guest taking away something special. Well done to all the Back of House students - making and packaging 260 jars of jam and honey is no small feat - they even had time to experiment with ‘Bacon Infused Jam’.
To top off the event, our school community and P & C raised $1,194.00 for Rural Aid Australia as part of their 'Buy a Bale' Campaign. As our focus is on providing the 'Paddock to the Plate' experience, we also wanted to show our support to the farmers and give back to the community - a good experience for our students to be a part of. Thank you to all the guests for their donations.
A huge thank you to all the staff and community members that helped with the running of the event leading up to, and on the day. Bring on ‘Paddock to Plate 2020’. Enjoy looking through the photos of this fantastic event.
During week 5 a group of Agricultural Practices students participated in our Condamine Tour. The tour allowed students to expand their knowledge and understanding of various agricultural enterprises. We visited the Dalby Saleyards with Phil from Teys Australia witnessing the fast pace nature of auctioneering over 4500 head of cattle and the traits Teys Australia look for in cattle to go into their feedlot. BaseCamp Dorpers allowed the students to actively participate in the weighing and pregnancy testing of ewes and lambs. A fish farm in the middle of the Condamine? Yes we visited the Condabilla Fish Farm where they specialise in Murray River Cod and Silver perch production. The students witnessed the large dams with enclosed concrete races to grow the fish as well as the harvesting and packing facility. Next was Teys Australia Condamine Feedlot where over 30 000 head of cattle are fed a precise ration depending on their set market. Students witnessed the efficient husbandry procedures of adding new cattle to the feedlot including ear tagging, drenching and tail clipping. The students were delighted with an amazing lunch provided by Teys Australia. Last but not least was Bulliac Angus Stud where students helped to feed the 60 bulls for the bull sales. The students were amazing and actively participated in all activities and asked so many questions relating to the different agricultural enterprises we visited. Well done to all involved.
Hello Beenleigh,
The final piece of assessment for 12 Aquatics Practices this term, asked students to respond to “Shark nets; Friend or Foe?”
On Tuesday the 20th of August I had the pleasure taking the year 12 aquatic practices students on excursion to Shark and Ray Gardens on Beenleigh Redland Bay Road. This was a fantastic hands on experience for students and myself (Please watch Video). If you’re looking for something to do on weekends, I highly recommend going to see Paul at Shark Ray and Gardens.

Throughout term 3 some of our Year 7 and 8 students have participated in the AMAYDA program at the PCYC. They have been learning lots of martial art skills from the trainers of Jeff Horne. This program has really seen this group of students come together to build positive relationships with each other, develop their physical literacy and learn some amazing self defence skills.
During week 8 and 9 we were lucky enough to have the Australian Anti Ice Campaign present to the Year 8s and 11s around the dangers surrounding this drug. With the clear message of “Not even once”. The presenters were very engaging and shared with us the harsh realities that exist when Ice is present in your system and what changes it has on your body and brain. The feedback from these presentations were positive from both staff and students and we thank them for coming in to help us gain an understanding about this issue and the support that is available.
Lighting the way Conference 7.9.19
A great day was had with us attending 3 different workshop from inclusive classrooms to domestic violence. Some comments from the participants were:
Lea Saunders: I really enjoyed most of the workshops and of course the free stuff.
Shannon Carlisle- Lighting the way was a great opportunity. My favourite class was on Erratic Behaviour in ADHD, ADD and Autism.
Stephanie Lu: LIGHTING THE WAY enlightens me in many ways. I am grateful for the opportunity to interact with peers and to absorb7 dedicated Teacher aids attended the Saturday bi-annual lighting the Way Conference new knowledge. I love the workshop “Learning to Pause”. It is practical for me at work and life.
Tania Upu: Once again, the Lighting the Way conference did not disappoint. The workshops on resilience and student mental health and wellbeing were very informative and educational. I will certainly use much of what I learnt, not only in the workplace, but at home as well.
Will O’Hare: Lighting The Way provided me with far more confidence in my abilities and allowed me the opportunity to showcase and develop new skills and practiced skills. It was a great educational experience and I look forward to next year’s event!
Staff this year participated in Jersey Day. A day where people wear sports jerseys to raise awareness for organ donation. Jersey day has been inspired by the story of Nathan Gremmo who was tragically lost in an accident in May 2015. Nathan’s family chose to give the gift of life to others to honour the legacy of Nathan’s generous personality. There are families directly involved in the school that have been effected by this issue and many lives have been saved because of people deciding to donate their organs. The staff also contributed funds and we managed to collect just under $400, which is a great effort to all who got involved. Thank you!
