Principal's Story

Published by Beenleigh State High School

Our Fifth Paddock to Plate luncheon is on next Friday and we have 260 people booked into the school hall to see our students at their best.  Thank you to all who are taking part in this wonderful showcase.  The lunch will showcase our school's – Production, Preparation, Presentation and Performance showing off the many and varied skills of our school community.  Our Partners in this project include Club Beenleigh, PCYC, Hammel and Sons, Gottzinger, McDonalds- Beenleigh, Arunta Fisheries, Oktoberfest, Logan City Council, Beenleigh Distillery and Teys Australia as well as our school Agriculture, Music, Catering and Hospitality departments.

We are in the middle of a very important time in terms of student results and especially so for Year 12s.  All teachers accept and encourage drafts so please encourage your child to complete them.  Most students should have some assignments due at the moment so if you can try and read them it can make a big difference to overall results.  The last QCS testing will take place during the first week in September.

On Sunday the 8th September Beenleigh Historical Village is celebrating Heritage Day at the Village.  There will be a range of family friendly fun activities including our Agriculture Department providing a livestock display and our Vanteen being present.  Our students will also provide music, singing and dance performances.  It will be great to see many people coming back to enjoy the activities provided by the hardworking committee.  See flyer inside.

Our local state member, Ms. Melissa McMahon has invited our senior leaders to a BBQ at parliament house on Monday 2nd September.  I thank Ms. McMahon for this opportunity for our students to see the workings of Government and mix with other community members. Thank you to the member for Macallister!

Our information nights for primary schools have been taking place over the term with Mr Middleton and a group of students talking about the Year 6s going into Year 7.  If any prospective parents need additional information please contact the school.

All parents are reminded that the Annual Contribution Levy is well and truly due.  The levy needs to be paid before students can participate in school activities like the Senior Formal. Please pay the levy as soon as possible.

The Wealth Academy

Published by Beenleigh State High School

Beenleigh State High School in partnership with the Beenleigh Yatala Chamber of Commerce are leading the way in financial literacy by rolling out a new program designed to engage and improve students financial life skills.

The Wealth Academy’s financial life skills library of resources will be rolled out to all students and is relevant from not only a curriculum perspective but it aims to support the general financial skills students will need as they progress through their teen years and into adulthood.

The Wealth Academy Director and former school principal, Ken Swan has developed the financial life skills program with the support of some of Australia’s leading financial institutions including FINSIA - the leading organisation for Australasia’s financial services industry.

Students will receive regular lessons around financial goal setting, budgeting, banking, credit cards and taxation just to name a few.  Parents are encouraged to engage in conversations with their children about finance and access the parent resource library available through a login process specific to The Wealth Academy and Beenleigh State High School. Parents will have access to many resources that will help them guide the financial education of their children.

We also thank the Beenleigh Yatala Chamber of Commerce for being very supportive of this cause and sponsoring the extensive resource library into the school.

Financial life skills message: Home activity – school lunches

Here is a practical idea to teach some financial numeracies and life skills to your child.

Ask your teen to work out how much you spend each week on providing school lunches. This is more difficult than you may think, especially if their lunch is made up of sandwiches rather than individualized packets and drinks.

The purpose of this task is to encourage your child to think financially and develop some financial numeracy skills.  Finding the individual price of two slices of bread, a slice of ham, half of a tomato (sliced) and slice of cheese, out of packet prices for each of the above, will take some effort. Don’t forget the fruit and drink prices! Doing this each day for a school week, is an activity that will definitely develop financial numeracy skills they will need later in life. Give it a go.

This message is provided courtesy of our school partners [Insert names of partners] and The Wealth Academy.  Please contact them if you require support with the financial education of your teens.

Reminder: Parents have access to their own website with information helping them to support the financial education of their children. Your login is [insert username] and password is [insert password].

Queensland Volleyball Senior Schools Cup

Published by Eric Massey

The Beenleigh SHS Open Girls Volleyball team competed at the Volleyball Queensland Senior Schools Cup on 9th - 11th August at Carrara Stadium.

The girls were very excited to participate in this event, particularly as it was the first major tournament for about half of the team.

Despite having a clear  height disadvantage in comparison to the other  teams in their division, and drawing a tough pool, the Beenleigh girls played consistently well to win 3 of their 4 preliminary matches to advance to the quarter finals against Kings Christian College.

The girls played skilful volleyball to defeat KCC convincingly and advance to a Sunday semi - final against John Paul College. Unfortunately, the team suffered a setback when Nazanin, our team captain, and one of our taller players, turned up on Sunday morning on crutches after spraining her ankle the previous evening.  Nevertheless, the girls fought hard and challenged their opposition, but in the end JPC's superior height advantage proved the difference in a high quality semi-final.

Beenleigh then faced Harristown SHS, the only team to defeat them in the preliminary rounds, in the Bronze medal playoff. Both teams were evenly matched in a great contest, but unfortunately Beenleigh lost in a very close three setter 23-25, 26-24, 15-12.

Congratulations to Nazanin, Madinah, Katerina, Nikaia, Sayeda, Momena and Madina for your performance, and the fantastic spirit you displayed as representatives for our school. To receive so many positive comments  from opposition coaches and players about the joyful way our girls play the game, makes it a privilege to take such a wonderful group of girls to this tournament.

Art Camp with Don Waters

Published by Natalie EBBSTEIN

At the beginning of this Term we took 8 students to be a part of another successful Don Water’s ……Art Camp at the Jacob’s Well Environmental Centre. Over the two day workshop the girls participated in a number of different activities where they expressed themselves through a variety of Art techniques. The camp was fundamentally about promoting social and emotional wellbeing whilst making new friends and stepping out of their comfort zones. It was great to see the girls imaginations kick in and watch them flourish over the course of the camp, we have quite a few artists in the making. All the girls had a great time.

Cert II Logistics Course Excursion

Published by Beenleigh State High School

On Thursday 15th August students completing the CERT II Logistics course through Strategix participated in an excursion to the Strategix Academy at Coopers Plains. The day included the practical exercises relevant to the course and students were treated to some forklift experience which many of them undertook with excitement.  Elijah, the trainer reported that, ‘the students in this course have again done the school proud’ with the way they represented themselves and Beenleigh State High School.

This is the second year of Strategix running CERT II Logistics as ‘Vocational Education in School’ and it enables students gain the skills to increase their productivity and employability whilst at school and beyond.  This course can certainly empower individuals and incite students to consider a career pathway in one of the fasted growing industries, in this present time.

Below is some anonymous feedback provided by students currently undertaking the course:

  • The course is fantastic.  It teaches you so much and has great opportunities.  I enjoy every bit of the course and the trainer is great, easy to understand and helps us with everything.
  • The course is really good, I would recommend it to others.  What I like about the course is how much they trust in us being able to get first-hand knowledge of machinery and the trainer really cares about our learning.
  • The course is a good idea because it opens up various opportunities through the logistics industry that I wouldn’t have been shown outside of school.  The thing I like about the course is that it gives you opportunities outside of school and helps you get ready to go into the workforce.  The trainer is good because he teaches the content in a way that participants are able to understand.

Cheers

Beenleigh Dance Eisteddfod

Published by Beenleigh State High School

The Beenleigh State High School Dance Troupe has worked incredibly hard in 2019 to prepare rehearse and perform three items to take to the Beenleigh Quota and Gold Coast Eisteddfods.

This year we were fortunate enough to work with Glenn Roberts who choreographed and mentored our hip hop dance crew. We were awarded with Highly Commended for this item and received great feedback in regards to attitude and energy. This is a fantastic result. Well done team!

Our jazz and contemporary dance numbers were choreographed by Kirsten Reed, who was assisted by Jasmin Proctor. Both routines received positive feedback from judges in regards to originality, creativity and intensity. They performed beautifully and purposefully. Great job, girls!

The students represented our school with pride at both eisteddfods, and performed with heart and enthusiasm. We had so much fun across the two days, and I couldn’t be happier with our achievements!

Where you from? BEENLEIGH!

Kind regards,

Jasmin Proctor
