Principal's Story

Published by Beenleigh State High School

Our Paddock to Plate luncheon will be a resounding success again this year. We have 250 people booked in to the school hall to see our students at their best. Thank you to all who are taking part in this wonderful showcase. The lunch will showcase our schools – Production, Preparation, Presentation and Performance showing off the many and varied skills of our school community. Our Partners in this project include Club Beenleigh, PCYC, Hammel and Sons, Gottzinger, McDonalds- Beenleigh, Arunta Fisheries, Oktoberfest, Logan City Council, Beenleigh Distillery and Teys Australia as well as our school Agriculture, Music, Catering and Hospitality departments.

We are in the middle of a very important time in terms of student results and especially so for Year 12’s. All teachers accept and encourage drafts so please encourage your child to complete them. Most students should have some assignments due at the moment so if you can try and read them it can make a big difference to overall results. QCS testing is also on next week.

Our information nights for primary schools have been taking place over the term with Mr Middleton and a group of students talking about the Year 6’s going into Year 7.  If any prospective parents need additional information please contact the school.

We are so lucky to receive the support of the Logan Village Country Bakery as they collected $1655 for our program to raise money to assist drought stricken farmers. They chose to join us and help raise money for the semi-trailer load of hay. If you are passing this bakery, drop in. I guarantee the coffee is delicious, customer service is full of smiles and it is truly good ol’ country service! Thank you Logan Village and students involved.

All parents are reminded that the Annual Contribution Levy is well and truly due. The levy needs to be paid before students can participate in school activities like the Senior Formal. Please pay the levy as soon as possible.

Yours Sincerely

ACADEMIC PROBATION - Years 10 to 12

Published by Andrea FIELD

Academic Probation at Beenleigh SHS is a support provision for students who have experienced difficulty in demonstrating results of a C standard or better on their report card. Typically this would involve Year 11 or 12 students attending this session during Period 5 on a Wednesday afternoon, each week for the following term until the next report card is issued.

Where students do not attend these sessions, they and their parents/caregivers may be required to attend a meeting with the Deputy Principal for their year level to discuss their academic commitment. Students may also be subject to a Notice of Concern, which can result in cancellation of a student's enrolment when academic and/or attendance expectations are not being met. Students who commit to attending these sessions and improve their results to a C standard or better on the next report card, will then be removed from Academic Probation for the following term.

For Term 4 this year,  this process will also be introduced for Year 10 students, following the release of results for Term 3. With the new QCE system beginning in Year 11 2019, it is imperative that students are passing their subjects, submitting work on time and have chosen the correct pathway for their future success. QCE credits for these students will begin to accumulate from Semester 1 next year and may also be eliminated at this point from their profile, should students make incorrect choices.

All students involved in this process are encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity for completing overdue work and to ensure that they come prepared on Wednesday afternoons to do so. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to support their student's improvement by ensuring that they remain at school during Period 5 on Wednesday afternoons and are not signing out at lunchtime before this session.

QPAC Backstage Tour

Published by Lisa Voight

Beenleigh High Drama students recently participated in a bacstage tour of the Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC). This amazing opportunity included a front and backstage tour of the Lyric Theatre, Billy Brown Studio and Cremorne Theatre. Students were able to witness some of the backstage components involved with running a live theatre production and had the opportunity to access restricted areas as part of the tour. We throughly enjoyed our tour and learnt a lot about the inner workings of a theatre venue.

MasterChef 2018

Published by Sarah Te Iwimate

Beenleigh Masterchef kicked off its 5th year of competitions on Thursday 26th July 2018.  Three competitions ran that day – Juniors and Intermediates in the morning, with the Seniors from midday onwards. The level of cooking this year has blown away the judging panel, with students serving up ‘restaurant-quality’ dishes.

The Juniors and Intermediate were challenged to present a Main meal. The teams had an hour to produce an exceptional dish that was judged from hygiene and safety, to taste, and presentation. The teams did such a good job, and worked really hard on researching, practising, and implementing a recipe that would win them the title of ‘Beenleigh Masterchef Winner 2018’. Congratulations to all the teams that competed in the Junior and Intermediate Competition, you all did a fabulous job. The finalists are:

Years 7/8:

1st - ‘Short Stuff’ – Ashleigh Doyle & Chloe Myers produced Chicken Parmigiana w/ sweet potato chips

2nd – ‘Lamb Chops’ – Katana Peaufa & Lydiah Faleolo produced Lamb Chops w/ mash, vegies, and gravy

3rd – ‘Sweet and Sour’ – Cadeau-Ineza Ndikumana & Giyahn Curtis produced Sweet and Sour Pork w/ steamed rice

Years 9/10:

1st – ‘Salt N Pepper’ – Amber Mulhearn & Letisha Smith produced Beef strips w/ roast vegetable salad and yoghurt dressing

2nd – ‘TOFTB’ – Phoenix Tulimaiau & Aaron Paroz-Smith produced Lamb Koftas w/ cous cous and mint yoghurt dressing

3rd – ‘Kitchen Nightmare – Marissa Shoesmith & Bonnie Ryan produced Spinach and Ricotta Lasagne w/sweet potato chips

The Senior Competition of Beenleigh Masterchef was a flurry of activity, with the six teams producing a Main meal and a Dessert in two hours.  The students tried all sorts of creative kitchen processes, from home-made ice-cream to chocolate balloon bowls.  It was very interesting to see the recipe choices these students made.  Not only were they ‘on trend’, but most recipes were also very advanced for their age. Congratulations to all the teams that competed in the Senior Competition, you all did such a wonderful job.  We are very proud of our students at Beenleigh. The finalists are:

Year 11/12:

1st – ‘Team Harlow’ – Jordan Harlow & Shyanne Harlow produced Chicken Schnitzel Sliders w/ cheese and chive slinky potato bits, and Nutella Cheesecake with macerated strawberries

2nd – ‘China All Stars’ – Emily Veivers & Marshall Kearns produced Beef Fillet w/ kumara potato mash and grilled asparagus and gravy, and a Chocolate Lava Cake

3rd – ‘Short Pork’ – Sarah Longham & Kacee Te Hau produced Cardamom chicken w/ rice and chilli flatbread, and a deconstructed ‘gaytime’ with home-made ice-cream and chocolate mousse biscuit.

Thank you to all our judging panel for your expert tasting skills and feedback, and teachers and teacher aides that ran the competition on the day.  We are very lucky to be able to run this competition at Beenleigh SHS, and showcase the skills of our fantastic future chefs.

Kitchen Operations Visit Teys Australia, Beenleigh Branch

Published by Sarah Te Iwimate

In preparation for ‘Paddock to Plate’, Grade 11 Kitchen Operation Students visited our local Teys Australia, Beenleigh Branch Abattoir.  The students, led by Allan Platten (ex-Beenleigh State High School Student) and Sharon Stewart, went through a detailed tour of the Beef Processing Plant.

To begin they were suited in whites, gumboots, hair nets and helmets with ear muffs - the students certainly looked the part.  Under the guidance of Allan, the students braved the kill floor and observed the initial meat processing stages.  Next was the Offal Processing Room, where employees were weighing, packing and sorting the meat.  It was fast paced and incredible to watch.

Teys Australia then put on a light lunch for the students and most, despite their recent experience, had developed a healthy appetite and enjoyed their lunch.  From there, the students were taken to the meat processing facility, where the main part of the carcass is broken down into cuts and sealed in preparation for transport or storage.  It was a flurry of activity, with employees moving constantly.

At one end, the carcasses are brought in by hook, and employees cut the body apart.  The speed and accuracy they exhibited is impressive and our students were memorised in their display of skill and teamwork.  As the meat is dropped down the chute, more employees start the sorting process - large cuts sent down one conveyer belt, smaller pieces down another belt.  The belts led to other processing rooms, where meat is sorted, weighed and sealed.  Every employee knows their job and they do it well. It’s incredible to see firsthand.

During the tour it was great to see so many past and present Beenleigh State High School Students working at Teys.  Some are completing their school based traineeships and others have finished school and now work full time.  It’s great to see so many students at Beenleigh are finding pathways to full time employment through the opportunities provided by Teys Australia and other local businesses.

By the end of the tour, our students had experienced the complete progression of meat processing from start to finish.  This experience has certainly helped our students to recognise the process to bring meat to the table.  This real world approach has equipped our students with the harsh realities of the meat industry, and no longer do these students think that meat comes solely from the supermarket.

Thank you Allan and Sharon for allowing our students to tour Teys Australia, Beenleigh Branch.  We have certainly enjoyed the experience, and now more than ever will be informed members of society who truly understand the costs involved of having a simple steak for dinner.  We applaud the precision of your factory and the many employees who work tirelessly to maintain those standards and results.  It was great to see so many Beenleigh State High School students both past and present working

Published by Odette Cheal

Chamber of Commerce, Beenleigh State High School

The generosity of local businesses continues, in the drive to assist farms in crisis.

We would like to thank the LOGAN VILLAGE COUNTRY FAMILY BAKERY and all the community members who go to this bakery for donating $1655.00 to this campaign and there is more to come. It is great to partner with you in this journey.

STEPZ FITNESS Beenleigh held a BBQ on the weekend with all proceeds being donated to this campaign and they have invited our students back for another fundraiser. Partnering with you is giving our students the opportunity to put their marketing skills into action.

As this campaign grows in momentum, the Soroptimist International invited students to speak about the Buy-A-Bale campaign. It was a great opportunity for our students, Michelle Haase and Isabel Sammes to put their public speaking skills to good use.

BUSINESS HIGHLIGHTS

This is what our students found:

LOGAN VILLAGE COUNTRY FAMILY BAKERY is a great place to get delicious coffee, treats gallore and the customer service is full of smiles and good ol' country hospitality.

STEPZ FITNESS  is a great place to speak to professionals who are keen to get your health into gear with a wide range of equipment and staff to assist your journey back to good health, well-being and the body you forgot you had! It is great value at $9.95 per week or you can pay $399 for the year.

THANK YOU to these wonderful, generous businesses for giving us the opportunity to be part of the farm rescue campaign to buy-a-bale for farms in crisis.

The Agriculture Department has given us more honey to sell, so more sales to come!

Teys Australia Tour

Published by Beenleigh State High School

On Tuesday 21st Aug, the senior Ag Practices class had the privilege of touring Teys Australia at Beenleigh as part of their Paddock to Plate Unit. Students were exposed to the whole production process through all facets of the value chain which Teys encompasses (feedlot, processing, packaging and value adding of products including hide and leather treatment). It was a wonderful experience for the students to witness the calibre of sophisticated machinery, hygiene and production process that transpires throughout Teys Australia. We would like to thank Teys Australia who gave our students the opportunity to enrich their learning.
