Principal's Story

Published by Beenleigh State High School

Welcome back for term 3 as this is our first newsletter.  I enjoyed my holiday and I was lucky enough to spend time with my family.  Reports went out before the break and thank you to all who attended the Parent Teacher evening last week.

As you are aware, our new building, “Bookinburra” is open to students.  Bookinburra is the Yugambeh name for Mt. Stapylton.  Bookinburra was a traditional and ancient signpost for the Yugambeh people and our school is nestled in its shadow.  The school commissioned Don Waters to paint a piece of art entitled “Semper Altiora” which now hangs in Bookinburra. Please have a look at our Facebook page to follow Don as he constructs this significant piece.

Mrs Harvey and Ms Te Iwimate were fortunate enough to visit Changzhou in China with four of our students during the break.  The students were outstanding ambassadors for both the school and our community.  We thank Dr Jennifer Cronin –1976 School Captain and President of the Wharf Group Hotels, and team Marco Polo along with Mr. Bernard Teo - the General Manager of Marco Polo Changzhou for the tremendous experience they provided for our staff and students.  Mr Bartlett also took two students to work in the hospitality industry in Newcastle at the Customs House Hotel during the break.  We also thank Mick and Kym Starky for providing this excellent opportunity for our students.

Just before the break it was announced that we won the Regional Showcase Award with our Paddock 2 Plate submission and it was forwarded to the State Final Judging Panel where we were successful in going through to the state final.  Operation commando was also recognised as a Showcase Regional winner as a great program helping to re-engage young men into their schooling and I thank our staff for their excellent support of wonderful programs.

There has been a number of great performances by our school community lately.  These include:

  • Excellent results from the Eisteddfod in music and dance!
  • Our four Hospitality students arriving back from work experience in China and talking on 612 ABC Mornings about the experience
  • Lorenz Sorensen-Erahmia making the Qld Under 12 Rugby League Team.

All students represented the school well and I again thank the teachers who provided these opportunities.

The P and C are again running our 5th Annual “Paddock to Plate” luncheon at the school on the 31st August in the Multi.  The lunch will showcase our school's – Production, Preparation, Presentation and Performance to showcase the many and varied skills of our school community.  Our Partners in this project are listed on the advertisement inside.  I am happy to announce the event is a sell out!  Well done P and C.

The school is currently completing the School Opinion Surveys (SOS).  The SOS asks a range of questions about the school to parents, students, and staff.  Thank you to those families who completed an SOS. The information from the surveys is returned in late October and I will share it with the school community at that time.

Finally, Year 12 students are reminded to finalise their accounts so they can participate in the end of year formals etc. I have spoken to a number of students recently and advised them that fees have to be paid and now is the time to sort this out.  Please see me if there are any issues around this.

Matt O'Hanlon

The Wealth Academy

Published by Beenleigh State High School

Beenleigh State High School in partnership with the Beenleigh Yatala Chamber of Commerce are leading the way in financial literacy by rolling out a new program designed to engage and improve students financial life skills.

The Wealth Academy’s financial life skills library of resources will be rolled out to all students and is relevant from not only a curriculum perspective but it aims to support the general financial skills students will need as they progress through their teen years and into adulthood.

The Wealth Academy Director and former school principal, Ken Swan has developed the financial life skills program with the support of some of Australia’s leading financial institutions including FINSIA - the leading organisation for Australasia’s financial services industry.

Students will receive regular lessons around financial goal setting, budgeting, banking, credit cards and taxation just to name a few.  Parents are encouraged to engage in conversations with their children about finance and access the parent resource library available through a login process specific to The Wealth Academy and Beenleigh State High School. Parents will have access to many resources that will help them guide the financial education of their children.

We also thank the Beenleigh Yatala Chamber of Commerce for being very supportive of this cause and sponsoring the extensive resource library into the school.

Financial life skills message: Websites of interest

Here are two websites that will interest parents interested in the financial education of their children. The first website is provided by the Australian Government, while the second is a reflection by a young person.

The Australian Government Learning Potential website includes a focus called Financial literacy – essential skills for your teens.

“Is your teen developing the knowledge and skills needed to make good financial decisions throughout their life? Here are some great ideas to help your teen get into good financial habits.”

Source

On the TeenVogue website (USA) a reflection titled Why financial literacy is so important?  It’s about independence is featured. The by-line says “In this op-ed, college student Margot Nelson explains why she chose 2018 as the year to become financially literate.”

It is a worthwhile read especially for young women.

Newcastle Trip

Two of our hospitality students Tinashe Madau and Bradley Hart travelled to Sydney and Newcastle with Mr Bartlett over the break to complete work experience at Customs House and the Fox & Hunter Hotel Newcastle. Customs House is a fine dining/function centre in the heart of the city where the boys actually made and prepared fine foods and the Fox & Hunter is a band venue with big catering turnover. The staff at both venues were very impressed with the level of their work and said they were examplary students. The boys also got to see the Sydney Opera House for the first time and some other sites in Sydney and Newcastle. Well done boys!

"Science is Fun!" - Toilet Paper Solar Systems

Published by Emina Sehic

Year 7 Science Extension students were on a roll modelling the distances of the Solar System using toilet paper. The students used mathematical formulas to calculate exactly how far each sheet of toilet paper representened in a scale, and how many sheets theyd need in total to model each planet - turns out Neptune, is 300 toilet sheets away, or 4498 million kilometers from the Sun! The students really shone like stars as they began to understand how our Solar System in structured, and were able to display high levels of cross curricular priorities as they modelled their conceptual knowledge.

Did you know: Pluto is not the only Dwarf Planet, and the USA doesnt agree so has a holiday dedicated to it! Saturn and Jupiter rain diamonds! One of Pluto's Moon (Charon) is so large is makes Pluto wobble due to its gravity! The Planet Nixon is the size of Australia!

Griffith Entrepreneurship Marketing Seminar

Published by Beenleigh State High School

Our Business students Ngawini Teremoana, Sade Siosifa and Shauntay Siosifa attended the Entrepreneurship Seminar at Griffith University and had an amazing time learning about digital marketing and watching business owners networking and in action at a seminar. Dr Timo Dietrich, Deputy Director, Social Marketing and Joshua Lewis, Director of Dorks Delivered gave Digital Marketing industry perspectives and insights to over 100 business owners taking part. These students found the seminar engaging and learned a great deal on how businesses continue to attract customers through developing their digital marketing strategies. The students also gained a few really helpful tips on how present to the public when you are too nervous to do public speaking. These students have been invited back to the next seminar; to investigate marketing strategies, to network with business owners and to value add to the quality of their assessment they are working on - Marketing in today’s world.

Everyday Counts Skyzone Excursion

Published by Beenleigh State High School

We all know that everyday counts, and well it certainly pays off all you have to do is ask the 100 students we took to Skyzone on the last week of Term 2.  The students who were able to attend were those with outstanding attendance and also those “movers and shakers” who had made the greatest improvement to their attendance.  The place was abuzz with Beenleigh Shirts as the students took to the numerous trampolines and courses the venue had to offer.  The Ninja warrior course was a favourite and one, which tested the students’ strength and endurance.  In addition, the squeals that came from lots of the students as they launched themselves into the foam pit from varying bouncy heights was one which tested my nerves as I watched from below. The students’ behaviour was exemplary and it was such fun to see everyone having a brilliant time.
