Principal's Story

Published by Beenleigh State High School

Welcome back for term 3 as this is our first newsletter. I enjoyed my holiday as I was fortunate enough to visit Changzhou in China with Ms. Te Iwimate and four of our students, Emily Vieivers, Sarah Longham, Marshall Kearns and Isiah Blair.  The students were outstanding ambassadors for both the school and our community.  Dr. Jennifer Cronin –1976 School Captain and President of the Wharf Group Hotels, who owns and operates Marco Polo Hotels visited our group and spent time talking to our students. We thank Dr. Cronin and her team including Mr. Bernard Teo - the General Manager for the tremendous experience they provided for all - myself included.

Just before the break it was announced that we won the Regional Showcase Award with our Operation comMANdo program. It went to the State Final Judging Panel where we were unsuccessful. Operation comMANdo is a great program helping re engage young men into their schooling and I thank Mr. Clinch, Mr. Harvey, Mr. Townsend and the PCYC for their excellent support.

Reports went out before the break and thank you to all who attended the Parent Teacher evening last week.

There has been a number of great performances by our school community lately. These include

  • Our ATSI Students recently opened the Queensland Indigenous Teachers Conference and participated in the Creative Generations performance which I was unable to attend at the Convention Centre last week. Thank you Ms. Kruger and Ms. Field for assisting in this excellent opportunity.
  • Mr. Massey and Mr. Mackney are both representing the school in the Legends of League match at Bill Norris Oval next Saturday Night. It should be a great night and I hope our two intrepid staff survive!
  • Our four Hospitality students arriving back from work experience in China
  • Our 13 and 15s Girls Rugby League Teams in Karen Murphy Cup Regional Finals series.

All students represented the school well and I again thank the teachers who provided these opportunities.

The P and C are again running our 4th Annual “Paddock to Plate” luncheon at the school on the 31st August in the Multi. The lunch will showcase our school's – Production, Preparation, Presentation and Performance to showcase the many and varied skills of our school community. Our Partners in this project are listed on the advertisement inside.  I am happy to announce the event is a sell out! Well done P and C.

Finally, Yr. 12 students are reminded to finalise their accounts so they can participate in the end of year formals etc. I have spoken to a number of students recently and advised them that fees have to be paid and now is the time to sort this out. Please see me if there are any issues around this.

Regards

Mr Matt O'Hanlon

P&C News

Published by Vicky Brown

Welcome back to Term 3.

The P&C is happy to support students who perform well in their chosen field and make it to the next level. Please congratulate Sienna Byrne and India Seeto, both from Year 7 for their inclusion in the Under 12 South Coast Girls Rugby Team. Well done girls and coaches. All students who make it to this level are eligible for a $100 cheque from the P&C to go towards compulsory uniform purchase and other expenses incurred.

Our fundraising continues this term with raffles at the Beenleigh Sports Club on the 24/8- Dance, 26/8 and 27/9 for Girls Rugby.

Fundraising is a vital part of what the P&C does to support students with extras which school budgets cannot cover. The dance group is able to purchase costumes and pay competition fees.

Next meeting is the 20th August at 5.30p.m. in the ELC- everyone is welcome to attend.

Thanks

Merit Points Rewards

Published by Beenleigh State High School

Merit Point Rewards

Over the past fortnight, we had our first merit point raffles for both the Junior and Senior school. Students have responded positively to the new merit point system with over 600 students in the draw across the school.

For parents who are unware, students are able to earn merit points through demonstrating positive behaviours at school in both the classroom and playground. To be eligible for the draw students must achieve 25 points within a 2-week period and if they are able to achieve more than 25, their chances of winning increase greatly.

Merit points are earned by demonstrating the following behaviours:

  • 1 point – Positive behaviour to meet expectations
  • 2 points – Going above & beyond expectations
  • 3 points – Clearly influencing & impacting others through positive behaviour

As students accrue merit points, they will progress through the following merit point milestones, which result in acknowledging and celebrating positive student behaviour with parents.

Bronze [100 Merit points] - Text message sent home

Silver [200 Merit points] - Letter, email and text message sent home

Gold [300 Merit points] - Letter, email and text message sent home

Platinum [600 Merit points] - Letter, email and text message sent home

The winners of the first merit point rewards raffles were:

Junior

Jahmala Barnes

Mercedes Wood

Izabella Charman

Rider

Senior

Kezia Coquilla

Isabelle Sammes

Hope Wilson

Logan Holman

Congratulations to the winners and to all the students who were eligible for the first raffle draws. The Engagement Team would also like to acknowledge the very generous contribution made by Krispy Kreme Donuts who have committed a box of assorted donuts to every weekly draw. Their involvement has definitely contributed to an increase in positive behaviours and merit points across the school. In addition, Beenleigh Driving School has generously donated three driving lessons for our senior school draws which will come in very handy for our year 11 and 12 students. We are very appreciative of this support.

Pink and White Lace with all the Trimmings and Tarts

Published by Sarah Te Iwimate

Beenleigh’s Hospitality Department invited its beautiful team of staff to attend the annual High Tea.  With a full guest list, and an even longer waiting list, our High Tea was sold out in record time.  Our students fluffed, trialled, baked, whipped, cut, piped, poured and cooked to bring this year’s theme to life; Pink and White Lace with all the Trimmings and Tarts.

The Front of House Team, led by Hospitality Teacher Chelsea Davis transformed the Trade Training Centre into an image you would find in a Beatrix Potter Book.  It was enchanting, with a touch of elegance and complimented with timeless lace and pink decor.  Ms Davis and her team thought of everything; teapot planters with carnations and daisys, white lace and perfectly placed pink plates, faux champagne with strawberries and delicious iced tea.

The Back of House Team, led by Hospitality Teacher Sarah Te Iwimate, had a busy few days leading up to the event.  The menu was extensive and challenged the traditional fixed mindset of a High Tea.  Our back of house students Jordan Harlow, Marshall Kearns and Joshua Ball brought their own special recipes to the menu and they did a fabulous job!  The savouries included Chicken Schnitzel Sliders, Bacon and Asparagus Twists, Roast Pumpkin and Caramelised Onion Quiche, and Handmade Mini Pull Apart Loaves.  The sweets included Beenleigh Chocolate Mousse, Banoffee Tarts, Mini Macarons, Carrot Cake, Chocolate Tortes, and Lemon Meringue Pie.  It was wonderful to add such a youthful spin on a traditional form of service. I’m most proud of my team.

As guests arrived, they were greeted with pink bow ties, smiles, and a chilled refreshment.  As we watched jaws drop and guests giggle with anticipation, it was clear, we had successfully brought back the inner child that resides in all adults.  The table filled and the conversation hummed, the coffee was served and the food was yum.  And just like that it was over.  Treat boxes were packed, off to the classroom to teach some Maths.

Chelsea and I, on behalf of our Hospitality Team would like to thank all the staff who attended our Pink and White Lace High Tea.  We enjoyed the experience and hope you will join us again next year as we take you on a flamboyant journey through the “Looking Glass”.

Phillip Gwynne visit

Published by Kelly Wonnacott-Wakeham

On Friday 27th July 9B, 10A and 10C had a wonderful opportunity to meet with the author Phillip Gwynne. He shared some of his childhood experiences with us to let us know that you can shape your future by making certain decisions. He explained how he did not start writing until he was 38 but he was told by his primary school teacher that he was a good writer, which had stuck with him through all of the different pathways he had decided to take. He also read some of the first book he had published Deadly Unna, which some of the Year 10 students are reading within their class and showed the trailer for the film that he wrote the screenplay for based on the book. It was great to see the students so engaged.
