Principal's Report

Published by Nambucca Heads High School

Dear Parents and Community

As we come to the end of Semester One, 2020 I would like to thank everyone in the NHHS community for your support of the school since the coronavirus outbreak in mid-March. Since we have welcomed students back to school full-time on  25 May I would like to congratulate and thank all students for the way they have settled back into school. Term 3 will hopefully see more restrictions  lifted and we can continue to try and make NHHS the place it was before COVID-19 in all aspects of the school day.

All Year 12 students have been enrolled in  Edrolo, an online resource designed to provide students with engaging, informative and comprehensive presentations, which will give extra assistance as they prepare for their Trial and HSC exams. The program has video lectures, examples from past exams, and interactive quizzes. Teachers will email students with instructions for accessing the site. You can access  parent information at: https://edrolo.com.au/parents/

Have a great holiday, get out and enjoy the pristine beauty of this wonderful part of Australia in which we live.

All students return Tuesday 21 July.

Green Team

Published by Nambucca Heads High School

Students from Years 7 - 9 who are involved in the Green Team each Thursday or Friday have been busy doing a variety of activities.  During Term 1, they participated in kayaking skills on the Nambucca River and had an overnight camp with lots of activities, including beach walks, swimming and snorkelling.  Students worked together on the camp to build possum and bird boxes for donation to bushfire affected areas.

During the learning from home phase and COVID restrictions, the Green Team used Zoom to meet with Warwick and completed some tasks including growing vegetables and learning about the birds of our area. They are looking forward to going back out into the bush to use our new binoculars to spot some of the birds that we learnt about.

Since returning to face to face, we have been learning knot tying and Nathan Go-Sam was the absolute champion, setting the record for tying a clove hitch, while blindfolded, in 1 ½ seconds!  Year 9 have also been doing garden work at school, constructing a fire pit in the centre of the yarning circle and restoring seats with Mark.  We had a day on the ropes course with Ms Sarah McGill and had to work together to overcome fears and support one another.

Each week we prepare and eat healthy food suitable for outdoors and camping and have enjoyed pizza in the school pizza oven, Warwick’s famous steak roll, lots of fruit and healthy snacks.

We are hoping to get back to our bushwalks, camps and paddling next term once excursions are permitted again.

More Improvements

Published by Nambucca Heads High School

As Term 2 draws to a close we still have improvements happening on our school grounds. Just this week we have had the concreting around the outdoor basketball courts completed and the surface fixed. We have also had the slab for the new outdoor table tennis tables poured. They will hopefully be ready to go at the beginning of Term 3 and will be an outstanding asset to our school. Not only will they be another great activity for our students, but the tables will add aesthetically to the entrance of our school.

Thank you to Hy-Tec concrete for their service and contribution to this project.

Year 7 in the Groove

Published by Nambucca Heads High School

Year 7 have been engaged in exploring rhythms using untuned percussion instruments. The Music Faculty recently purchased a set of Djembes (a rope-tuned skin-covered goblet drum played with bare hands, originally from West Africa. ) to further the students understanding of Tone Colour and Duration. Each group performed a 4-part rhythmic ostinato (a continually repeated musical phrase or rhythm) and made decisions about the structure and volume of the piece. It has been an enjoyable experience for all students.                                                             Ms Tina Hyson

Activities in the Support Unit

Published by Nambucca Heads High School

Recently students in HB1 have been working on some artwork for the outside of the classroom. With help from teacher Ms Louise Young and aids Lynn Neal and Jess Pigram, the students put together this beautiful sculpture for all to enjoy.

Science HB1 students have been looking at water and gravity. We made a mountain out of paper mâché and cardboard, and poured water over the mountain to see where the water would fall. Lachlan, Tim, Connor, Jarvis, Harriet and Monica then decided we would turn our mountain into a volcano, so we re-painted it, then used Diet Coke and Mentos to create the lava. It was spectacular and a lot of fun.                                                      Ms Tina Hyson

Nextwave film competition open for entries

Coffs Coast’s Screenwave International Film Festival is again hosting the NEXTWAVE short film competition for young regional Australians this year – and would like some short film entries from our school!

All films need to be under five minutes and include the phrase “What’s Next”. Creativity is highly encouraged. The best films will screen at SWIFF next January during the Nextwave Youth Film Awards, and tens of thousands of dollars in prizes are up for grabs to students (and our school!).

Register your child for Nextwave’s new free online filmmaking workshops

If your child isn’t sure how to make their short film, the Screenwave International Film Festival has made a step-by-step 10 episode video guide on beginner filmmaking, with episodes starting to roll out next week on the new Nextwave Online learning portal. To secure your child’s FREE access (thanks to Southern Cross University), register here: https://nextwavefilmfest.com.au/workshop/
