Principals' Gathering in Rockhampton

Last week was a great week to catch up with colleagues and listen to the many speakers during the gathering. On the last day, Professor Br David Hall Dean presented, "What sort of children do we want for the future:  sharpening the purpose of Catholic Education."  He spoke about the changing of attitude to GRATITUDE and not ENTITTLEMENT and where young people build a world for all to grow and flourish in!

I reflected on what was happening now at St Therese's Catholic Primary School and appreciated how we express gratitude through words, writing, and recognising and celebrating Nano Nagle 'Be the Light' and  Acts of Kindness awards. These are just some ways to teach students how to become grateful and practicing this will help make each child appreciate the goodness in his or her life more public. Students will be able to witness that blessings abound and that being thankful is a valued attitude.

Focus for students this week - Wearing correct uniform.

Have a great week!

Kind regards, Doiya

Dear Families & Friends,

This week I'd like to share with you Sr Kym's reflection as Easter approaches and we consider the different events that occured during Holy Week.

Just what is Resurrection about?

This coming weekend we celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus – but just what is it that we are celebrating? In a real sense it is easier to ‘appreciate’ his suffering and death, after all, we know suffering, we have experienced the passing of loved ones.  Even the Gospel writers who experienced the risen Jesus seem baffled, speaking of someone elusive – even while they stake the rest of their lives on preaching the reality of the amazing life Jesus offered (and still offers).  All our Church life hangs on the reality of this Resurrection.  How are we to appreciate what it means and make it a reality in our lives?

In one of the Easter stories, two of the disciples tell the Risen Jesus, whom they have not recognised, how all their hopes had been in him and that these hopes were dashed when he was tortured and killed.  Then Jesus unravels their story and gives them a new understanding of himself…and of themselves.  Their hopes and dreams were true and valid – they were just looking for their fulfilment in the wrong places, in the wrong way.  We too have hopes and dreams, sometimes ones so amazing that we fear even to tell them to ourselves.  At heart, these dreams are about being loved and loving.   Their truest fulfilment comes when we allow the Risen Jesus to speak to our hearts about these dreams and how we are to bring them to fulfilment in our lives.  Then, like those two disciples, our hearts will burn within us and we will know a new light guiding us.

Loving Jesus, come walk with me.  Listen to my hopes and dreams and untangle the ways in which they become twisted within me.  With your love and wisdom, may they blossom into new ways of living and loving.  I ask this in your name, confident that you will hear me.

Yours Faithfully,

Acting Assistant Principal: Religious Education

NAPLAN Online - Parent Communications

Dear Parents and Carers

NAPLAN Online update

Our students in Year 3 and Year 5  will undertake NAPLAN Online in May this year. NAPLAN Online brings many advantages, including a test design that offers assessment items tailored to students’ knowledge and current skill level.

We also participated in a national practice test on Monday 22nd March, 2021. This was an excellent opportunity to fine tune any technical and logistical issues, as well as familiarise students and teachers with the online testing process. The practice test is not an assessment of student knowledge and there will be no reporting of student results.

Parents and caregivers of students in these NAPLAN year levels need to be aware of important information relating to privacy, which can be found on the NAPLAN Online Queensland website’s parent information page  - (https://naplanonline.qld.edu.au/getting-ready/parent-information).

MAGGIE DENT - How do I get my kids to do chores!

"How many times do I have to ask you to...?" Sound familiar?

There are lots of reasons why parents don't make their kids do chores. Children can be bad at cleaning and the nagging to get them to do it is like torture. So why bother?

Author of How to Raise an Adult, Julie Lythcott-Haims, and Maggie Dent make the case for why you should persist and give you great tips on how to get them to do it (without the nagging!)

This Aboriginal Studies - stories, music and culture past and present

This entertaining exploration into the culture and day to day life in a hunter gatherer society will leave students with a lasting insight into Aboriginal histories and cultures. Troy Allen combines dance, storytelling and music and after showing, has students and teachers if willing, join him in the dance as they all mimic the kangaroo, emu and other Australian animals using their newly learnt movements that stretch back thousands of years. There is also a fine collection of artefacts, weapons, tools, nets and other everyday items all used to fully engage and educate. A constant throughout his stories is a theme of great respect for land and all creatures that inhabit it. When he can find the time, Troy enjoys fishing, hunting and seeking out seasonal bush tucker and cooking up a feast. He emphasizes that animals are hunted for food, never for sport and that when gathering bush tucker he and his family will only ever take what they and their friends can eat. Each performance is structured to the audience; whether that is a single year level or a prep to year twelve Central School, Troy includes everyone with his enthusiasm and down to earth approach. For nearly thirty years throughout Australia and around the world Troy has been entertaining audiences of all ages while simultaneously educating them in the life, culture and traditions of his current day family and ancestors.

Cania Dam Community Open Day - Family-Friendly Event - Saturday 29th May 2021

Dear St Therese's Community,

On behalf of Sunwater, we would like to extend an invitation to the St Therese's community to an Open Day at Cania Dam on Saturday, 29 May 2021 from 10:00am to 2:00pm.

The Open Day is a family-friendly event with our main focus being community education. Typically when we host an Open Day we aim to share information about:

  • how the dam works
  • history of the scheme
  • public safety
  • preparing for weather events; and
  • emergencies.

To complement our education focus, we will be inviting local community vendors to attend, including food and entertainment, and local police, fire and ambulance representation.

Thank you,

Karen Kiepe, Community Relations Advisor

Cania Dam

Construction of the dam on Three Moon Creek, a tributary of the Burnett River, was completed in 1982 and the lake it formed swallowed the abandoned gold mining town of Cania.

Tombstones relocated from the old town’s cemetery can be viewed at the Cania Dam lookout.

There are several theories as to how the stream on which the dam is built acquired its name, the most common being that a prospector saw a reflection of the moon in the creek and his billy at the same time.

The lake has a surface area of 720 ha, an average depth of 12 m and a capacity of 89,000 ML.
